A 29-year-old Port Orchard man was arrested Monday on suspicion of making a false police report that locked down South Kitsap High School and the Explorer Academy.

Port Orchard Police Department chief Alan Townsend said a 911 caller reported at about 8:30 a.m. that he had been shot several times. He provided an incorrect address.

Police determined his location was near the high school and advised that it be locked down. South Kitsap School District director of community relations Aimee Warthen said SKHS and Explorer Academy went into lockdown at 8:40 a.m.

Officers located the caller on the 100 block of Perry Avenue, which is about three or four blocks from the school. The police report indicated the suspect was under the influence of drugs.

Townsend said the caller has a history of making false police reports, including one last year where he claimed to have been shot on Highway 3.

Warthen said SKHS principal Jerry Holsten was able to notify parents about the situation through the district’s automated voice message system.

The lockdown, which Warthen said was the district’s first of the school year, ended at 9:30 a.m.
