Sophia Leonard awarded National Merit Scholarship

North Kitsap High School senior Sophia Leonard was awarded a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship underwritten by 3M. Leonard is one of 2,500 high school students in the country to win the National Merit Scholarship. She plans to study engineering in college next year.

Local students named to Azusa Pacific dean’s list

Poulsbo residents Madeline Johnson and Bethany Prindle were named to the fall semester 2009 dean’s list at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif., this week. Johnson is a nursing major and Prindle is majoring in music. Students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale to be named to the dean’s list.

Peter Severud earns Modern Woodmen of America scholarship

Peter Severud of Poulsbo has been awarded a $500 educational award from Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal benefit society that offers financial services. He is the son of Ken and Janine Severud and plans to use the grant to attend Olympic College in Bremerton.

Local students named to UW dean’s list

Several students from the North Kitsap area were named to the dean’s list for winter quarter 2010 at the University of Washington this week. Hansville resident Karoline Shawcroft was named to the list, as was Indianola resident Jayson Stemmler and Kingston residents Jessica Jetter, Sophie Kimura and Jessica Randall. Poulsbo residents Lesly Barcena, Bria Best, William Briere, Hannah Craswell, Briar Doty, Scot Forsythe, Brittany Haberly, Nathan Hickner, Hillary Houle, Chantelle Jacques, Samuel Mouser, Daniel Nguyen, Jennifer O’Connor, Christine Parker, Brian Parrott, Teresa Polizzi, Lauren Romero, Michael Searer, Andrew Smith, Lael Telles, Daniel Tetrick, Stephanie Tougas, Jessica Wenke and Christopher Zrout were also named to the list, as were Suquamish residents Zachary Aichele, Andrew Curtis and Nicholas Smith. Students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while carrying at least 12 credits to be named to the dean’s list.

Kingston High cheer squad hosts car wash

The Kingston High cheer squad will host a car wash from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the Kingston Albertson’s Mini-Mart. Donations will be accepted, and proceeds go toward the cheer squad and Kingston High Associated Student Body.

Kingston High hosts rummage sale

The Kingston High Grad Night Committee will host a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Kingston IGA grocery store on Highway 104. Money raised at the rummage sale supports the Kingston High Grad Night, a chaperoned, drug- and alcohol-free event for graduating seniors.
