Bainbridge and North Kitsap battled for early bragging rights in the spring tennis season, but the Spartans prevailed in the close match 4-3.
Viking Teegan DeVries began with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 victory over Spartan Elle Schuchman. But Bainbridge swept the other two singles matches. Izzy Wallin defeated Noelle Oberhultzer 6-0, 6-1 and Ruby Morrow beat Senna Pearson 6-2, 6-3.
Two of the four doubles matches went three sets. Katherine Walker and Cece Combs won the first one against Vikings Beckham Ochs and Olivia Cary 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. But NK’s Avery Kline and Ellie Stanford defeated Xiin Munson and Zoe Bellas 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Gabby Farley and Elsa Drugge defeated Vikings Andrea Zetty and Sophia Loverich 7-6, 6-4. In the final match, Vikings Tiffany Le and Audrey Crossgrvoe defeated Serena Hinshaw and Hazel Gorl 6-4, 6-1.
The Bainbridge High School girls tennis team began its 2024 season at home against the Sequim Wolves March 13, and although the Spartans had some first match jitters, the squad swept Sequim 6-0 and did not even lose one set.
Bainbridge ended up winning 85 games to 25 for Sequim.
Schuchman faced Sequim’s Caleigh Thompson for the first of three singles matches. Schuchman dominated in her season debut, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Wallin battled early against Sequim’s Tiffany Lam. The two split the first four games before Wallin took over and won the first set 6-3. In the second set, Wallin won the first four games and went on to win the set 6-1.
Morrow completed the singles matches with some excitement. She trailed Sequim’s Sydney Thomas-Harris 3-2 in the first set. However, Morrow fought back and won 6-4. In the second set, Morrow nearly blew a 5-2 lead. The two tennis players went into a tiebreaker before Morrow came out on top 7-6.
Bainbridge’s doubles teams dominated in all four matches.
Malia Lemieux and Walker defeated Sequim’s Sydney Hegvedt and Amara Gonzales 6-0, 6-2.
Combs and Hinshaw trailed 3-1 against Wolves Kendall Day and Kristine Prorok. Yet, the Spartan duo climbed back to win the first set 6-3. Combs and Hinshaw won the second set 6-2.
Bellas and Munson swept Wolves Kiera Morey and Azlyn Judd 6-0, 6-0.
Lastly, Bainbridge’s Eleanor Lee and Farley defeated Kimberly Heintz and Taylor Heyting 6-1, 6-1.
