North Kitsap High School basketball coach Scott Orness announced his resignation Aug. 30, closing the latest chapter in a highly successful coaching career in which the Vikings brought home a 2020 2A state championship and Olympic League championships in all nine of his seasons at the helm.
Orness said he is not retiring from coaching but is stepping away to support his son Cade, who graduated from NK this year and committed to play at Gonzaga after a successful high school tenure.
Meanwhile, Orness also said he will continue to remain present in the community through his DRIVE Basketball development program. “I plan on expanding the DRIVE program into high school and provide high-level training and coaching for area players with the goal to create a circuit team that will play around the country,” he said. “This will allow me to continue my passion for coaching, enjoy my son’s college basketball experience, and continue to grow Kitsap basketball programs.”
Orness accumulated a 191-47 record during his time with NK, including a dominating 101-10 Olympic League record. His teams finished sixth at state in 2017, 2019 and 2023 and advanced as far as the semifinals in 2022 and 2024, finishing third both seasons. The program’s highest point under Orness came in the 2019-20 season after the Vikings capped their 24-4 record with a 56-53 win over Clarkston to capture their first state championship in program history.
Before arriving at NK, Orness coached at Bainbridge High School where he nearly brought the same glory of a state championship to the Spartans before they finished as runners-up in the 2007 3A state tournament. Orness has accumulated over 330 wins in his coaching career, and he said 30 of his former players have gone on to play at the collegiate level.
“The best part of my job is the relationships I get to build with my players, coaches and all support staff.”
