Kitsap Humane Society’s annual Animal Krackers Gala to raise money to support vulnerable pets that come to the facility is set for Oct. 12.
“The event helps ensure our dogs and cats get the treats, food and care they need to get them ready to ready to be adopted,” said Mike Bush, KHS director of communications. “And our animals are not limited to dogs and cats. Right now, we have two chinchillas, a couple of birds, including a bunch of roosters and a peacock.”
Last year’s event raised $370,000 for the nonprofit.
The gala will feature dinner and a silent and live auction. Top items include a trip to France for four, a Cabo San Lucas getaway and dinner party at Canlis, valued at $3,500.
Attendees will learn about the work of the shelter. “We will have people presenting stories about animals that were saved in the new (lifesaving) clinic, adopted out under really difficult circumstances, and saved by our animal control office,” Bush said.
The inaugural “Apple of our Eye” award will be presented. The award honors its namesake, former state Rep. Sherry Appleton, who had been a KHS board member and volunteer and supporter of animal rights. She died last year at age 80.
Appleton, a longtime Poulsbo resident, represented the 23rd Legislative District. She also served on the Poulsbo City Council and was on Advisory Committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, to which she was appointed to by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
“She’s just a terrific lady. Her family will accept the award,” Bush said. The award goes to an individual or organization that has contributed to the Kitsap Humane Society’s mission.
Tickets for the gala at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort are $175 and available at www.kitsap-humane.org
