Suspect in 100 mph chase on BI caught despite shaving

Bainbridge Island police arrested a 34-year-old Silverdale man who shaved to try to avoid detection after eluding police and driving at speeds up to 100 mph.

The man was in Kitsap County Superior Court Oct. 16 charged with attempting to elude (maximum sentence five years in prison and a $10,000 fine); hit and run on an unattended vehicle (one year in jail and a $5,000 fine); and driving with a suspended license. Bail was $16,000.

Court records show BI police responded to Highway 305 at West Port Madison Road at 2:08 p.m. Oct. 15. An officer initiated a traffic stop because the license plate was sought in connection with a State Patrol and Suquamish Police Department hit-and-run investigation. That victim followed the suspect vehicle onto BI, but lost sight of it around Henderson Road.

The officer saw the suspect vehicle at the roundabout at Seabold Road. The officer pulled him over, and said the suspect was anxious, looking repeatedly in the mirrors. He said he did not know about a hit-and-run, but didn’t have his driver’s license or registration. His hands were shaking, and he provided information on his identity.

However, when the officer returned to his patrol car, the suspect spun out on the gravel and took off. He hit speeds up to 100 mph, while the officer was going 65 mph, then turned off his lights and siren and disengaged for safety reasons. The suspect turned onto Hidden Cove Road, but hit the guardrail because of his speed. He passed a vehicle by driving on the shoulder, and the officer lost visual contact. The officer said that road often has children and bicyclists so he wanted to ensure their safety.

Later, a man called police and said the suspect had hidden the vehicle on his property. The suspect became angry that the man had talked to police. The man told the suspect to turn himself in and called police again later and said the suspect was still on his property and had no plans to leave. The man said the suspect was drinking and belligerent, and police would have to use force to arrest him. But when police arrived he surrendered willingly, although he was clean-shaven to avoid detection.

Police later learned he had three driving under the influence cases in the last 10 years, and he did not have an ignition interlock device on the vehicle.

Another police report shows at 2:07 p.m. Oct. 15 there was a hit-and-run on Highway 305 at the Clearwater Casino in Suquamish. The victim was rear-ended, and he followed the vehicle onto BI.

The suspect was dating a woman who was renting a cabin at the site where the vehicle was found. The suspect was mad at the man for “ratting him out” to police. The man said he also had called the suspect’s boss, who also was trying to get him to turn himself in. The suspect was transported to the county jail in Port Orchard.
