Carter Dungy punched in a pair of North Kitsap’s four rushing touchdowns as the Vikings capped their regular season with a 38-7 beatdown of Bremerton in Poulsbo Nov. 1.
NK has now won five of its last six after starting the year 0-3, finishing with a 5-1 Olympic League record, alongside Olympic and Bainbridge at the top of the standings. The Vikings have advanced to the Round of 32 in the 2A playoffs.
“We’ve been proud of the kids and their consistency and just the whole program in general, you know,” NK coach Jeff Weible said. “They wanted to be the best in the league. All I know is I wouldn’t want to play us.”
While the defense did its job to shut out the Knights minus a garbage time late passing touchdown to senior wideout Ethan Guerrero, Dungy continued to put the Viking offense on his back. With his injured arm not nearly as constricted and wrapped as it had been through much of the second half of the season, the senior running back took the ball to the endzone once each half.
When he was not scoring, Dungy was setting the Vikings up for success like on his explosive 42-yard run in the first half to set up a 38-yard field goal for junior Andrew Knott.
“Carter’s running hard, and it was good not to see him need a full club on tonight,” Weible said. “It’s just week to week (still), but it’s getting better.”
Junior quarterback Dawsyn Anderson also finished the night strong, passing for a 26-yard TD and running in another from 12 yards out while throwing one interception.
Even with the loss, the Knight’s season is not done either despite Sequim’s clinching of the league’s fourth-place spot the night before. Bremerton will have a chance to earn the final spot allotted to District 3 this season in a home contest vs. Washington High School Nov. 5.
The full slate of Round of 32 games is expected to be seeded and released in the coming days.
