Twenty high school students from throughout the state participated in the August Wilson Monologue Competition on March 17.

Seven of the 20 participants were from South Kitsap High School.

It was a night of young actors performing the words of America’s greatest African American playwright.

“The opportunity to see our young people on a professional stage, in front of hundreds of people, made me proud to be an educator and even more proud to be from South Kitsap,” said Scott Yingling, dean of students at SKHS. “It was very entertaining to hear what people were saying all night. Where is Port Orchard? I thought it was a little farming community,”

Noah Skillman, a senior at South Kitsap High School, took second place overall and will be representing the area in New York City in May. He will compete against the best and most talented young actors from Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, New York, Atlanta, and Portland.

It is a three-day trip that includes Broadway shows and professional acting workshops. He will be performing on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre.

The students that represented South Kitsap at the Washington State competition were Cannon Jones, Emmilee Lambert, Morgen Bailey, Casey Alvestad, Riley Allen, Kaylie Brown, and Skillman.
