People join the military for various reasons.
Bob Snyder’s motivation was his older brother, who served in Vietnam and was wounded five times, earning two Purple Hearts.
“My brother and his experience was my biggest motivator in my interest in the Marine Corps,” Snyder said Nov. 11 at a Veterans Day ceremony at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
Snyder, who served from 1971-82, is a retired Marine commanding officer. He was commissioned from the University of Washington ROTC.
“I just wanted to serve my country,” he said.
Retired Navy submariner Jean Gherren served 20 years as an electrician. “The Navy really shaped me into the person I am today. I’m 67, and the Navy still has my heart.”
The event, hosted by the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Navy League, featured a morning of ceremonies, musical performances and historical displays.
The ceremony highlighted the sacrifices and contributions of U.S. veterans. Retired LCDR Thomas Kleehamer, a former Navy SEAL, served as the keynote speaker, sharing his experiences and reflections on military service.
The program included a performance by the U.S. Navy Band and bagpiper Robert Finley. Attendees observed solemn moments such as the ceremonial bell ringing, a rifle salute and the playing of Taps.
Displays showcased antique military vehicles and vintage uniforms, offering a glimpse into the history of the armed forces.
