The Bainbridge Community Tennis Association is asking for donations to help pay for tennis courts at Sakai Park.
The organization has committed to the BI Metro Parks & Recreation District to pay 50% of the cost. It has reached about halfway to its $185,000 goal. It has received grants from Bainbridge Rotary, the BI Parks and Trails Foundation, the PNW branch of the US Tennis Association and has another USTA grant pending.
The nonprofit has been promoting tennis and youth development for over 20 years on BI. Its dues have paid for benches and nets at Battle Point Park, organized community play, the Bainbridge High School sanican, youth lessons and now for additional courts as the growth in popularity of pickleball has led to the need for more courts. Funds from its annual tennis tournament, auction and dinner were earmarked for the project, and its members have donated.
The central location of Sakai makes it ideal for classes, drop-in and after-school play for those who work and live here. “Please help us finish the task of providing non-fee based recreational courts for users of all ages and skill sets,” Loanne Harmeling says in a news release.
