South Kitsap senior Nicole Hinely placed 10th in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.53 seconds in the Class 4A state girls swim and dive championships Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Hinely’s time in that event actually was the ninth best, but her 1:00.2 time in Friday’s preliminary relegated her to the consolation final. Skyline’s Katie Kinnear won the event in 53.46.
Hinely, a four-year state participant, also competed in the 200 freestyle, where she finished 15th (2:00.52). Jefferson’s Amber Cratsenberg won the event in 1:52.22.
“She came back and posted season-bests in both of her swims,” coach Cliff Rousell said. “She kept getting faster every time she got into the water.”
Hinely plans to attend Washington State University, where she will pursue a degree in nursing.
“She’s been a real source of leadership for her teammates,” Rousell said. “She’s motivational. We were lucky to have her.”
Peterson top placer for Wolves at state
South Kitsap junior Jessica Peterson was the school’s top placer when she finished 25th in 19 minutes, 11.2 seconds at the Class 4A state girls cross-country meet Nov. 5 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
The Wolves’ girls team finished 15th with 319 points. Tahoma won the state title with 88 points.
In addition to Johnson, senior Molly Wheeler was 69th (19:50.7) and classmate Amanda Wilson finished 107th (20:25.4) for South. Also, junior Keegan Tasker was 123rd (20:41.8) and sophomores McKenzie Henry (21:17.5) and Laura Rill (21:39.2), placed 130th and 134th for the Wolves, respectively. Junior Justine Morris (21:52.4) was the school’s final female finisher in 137th. There were 146 participants in the 4A girls meet.
Two boys made their first state appearance for South. Junior LaForrest Church finished 104th (16:58.6), while senior Dan Schulte was 118th (17:10.4). There were 148 participants in the 4A boys meet.
South Kitsap grad Bloomquist re-signs with Arizona
Willie Bloomquist, a 1996 South Kitsap graduate, agreed to a two-year, $3.8 million contract Nov. 8 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
According to The Arizona Republic newspaper, Bloom-quist turned down an offer from the division-rival San Francisco Giants and chose to return to Arizona.
“The thought of him leaving our club and going to a rival team in our division — I didn’t really like the idea of that,” Arizona general manager Kevin Towers told the Republic.
Bloomquist, 33, hit .266 with four home runs and 26 RBI in 350 at-bats this year for Arizona. He has a .264 career batting average in 10 years that also includes stints with Seattle, Kansas City and Cincinnati.
