Becoming a business traveler

Some people love to travel and others, well, not so much. I fall into the category of loving it especially when it is for vacation and pleasure.

Some people love to travel and others, well, not so much. I fall into the category of loving it especially when it is for vacation and pleasure.

This month is one of those rare occasions through my paid profession that I get to be business traveler.

For those of you who are new to reading my column, I am an unpaid volunteer for Sound Publishing which is the company that produces the Bremerton Patriot and Central Kitsap Reporter. Writing about my community, and at times like this my own adventures, is something that I do for my own enjoyment and to give back to the area that I so appreciate.

I have a full-time job in an industry that is completely unrelated to news, reporting and publishing. This year will be my tenth year with the small North Kitsap business that I work for.

Not only do I enjoy it, but I am also able to have the flexibility to do all of the other community related things that like to do such as volunteering at my child’s school and working as an appointed member of the Bremerton Parks and Recreation Commission.

Part of my paid job is coordinating all of the trade show and business travel for the owner of the company and my co-workers. I fully understand that my coming excursion will not be all fun and games. Sure it is being held in a warm sunny location at a first class hotel hosting a swanky credentialed conference with a rather generous expense account at my disposal. However, I will be expected to learn some significant skills, make some contacts and bring back important information that will improve our business procedures and our bottom line.

There are worse places to be than San Diego, California, in February for five days. I have been to the wonderful state of California on more than one occasion, but I have never been to San Diego. Thanks to this opportunity I will now be able to check off one more place on my continental United States bucket list.

Since the training conference ends at noon on a Friday, I was able to finagle my flight out to later on Saturday and add a night on my own dime at a different hotel closer to some interesting attractions. A little relaxing time just for me to soak up some new scenery and enjoy some of what San Diego has to offer.

While I am away, the males of my house have several days where they can bond and do all the things they wish they could do or in most cases not have to do if Mom is not there to nag them into doing it. I try not to think about that part too much as long as all of the evidence is cleaned up before I get back.

The look on their faces when they pick me up at the airport will tell me everything I need to know.
