More than 1,000 Sailors assigned to Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) participated in the Navy-wide advancement exam cycle March 6-20.
The 175-question multiple-choice exams are administered each year on the first, second and third Thursday of March and September and test professional and general military knowledge.
This month 371 Stennis Sailors took the exam for third class petty officer, 607 for second class petty officer and 135 for first class petty officer.
“It takes a lot of preparation to ensure advancement exams are ready for this large of a crew,” said Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Natalie Camden, from Arlington, Va. “We have been verifying Sailor eligibility and ordering exams since December.”
Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Chelsea Dell, from Altoona Pa. said she has been studying since November.
“I made more than 2,000 flash cards,” said Dell. “All of the preparation paid off because a lot of the material I studied was on the test.”
To advance to the next higher pay grade, a Sailor must score above the final multiple score for that exam cycle. The final multiple score is comprised various items including the test score, performance evaluation average and time in pay grade.
Stennis is currently undergoing a Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) maintenance period at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
