TACOMA — It appeared to be the worst possible scenario for South Kitsap.

In the waning seconds, Stadium’s Patrick Minzel, who already had converted eight 3-pointers, had a pair opportunities from beyond the arch. But both rimmed off and Nate Anderson missed a layup to help the Wolves escape with a 66-65 win Friday night in Class 4A Narrows League play.

“I’m proud of these guys,” South coach John Callaghan said. “We hung in there.”

South (4-2 overall, 2-1 league) appeared in control when a tip-in by junior forward Josh Osinski gave the Wolves a 66-61 lead with 2:10 minutes left. But the Tigers (0-7, 0-3) responded with four unanswered points in 70 seconds on a jumper by Eric Anderson-Connolly and later on a layup from Taylor Strickland.

That put Minzel, who scored 25 of his game-high 30 points during the first half, in position to win the game.

“We did a much better job on him in the second half,” Callaghan said.

Ryley Callaghan (13), Nars Martinez (11) and Angelo Hazely (10) all scored in double figures for South. The Wolves, who shot 46 percent from the field, had one of their most balanced scoring games of the season. Devon Newquist and Osinski each scored nine points.

South next plays Dec. 27-29 in the Bellevue Holiday Classic at Bellevue College.

“This will give us momentum heading into Bellevue,” Callaghan said.
