A former Poulsbo public works director is returning to city government, this time as a council member.

The Poulsbo City Council selected Jeff Bauman, 62, to fill its vacant seat Saturday afternoon in a unanimous vote. Bauman will take over the position left open by Becky Erickson, who became Poulsbo’s mayor Dec. 28.

Bauman was among six applicants the council interviewed for the position in a sparsely attended work session. He will be sworn in at the Jan. 13 council meeting.

Bauman served as Poulsbo’s public works director from 2006 until 2008. During his 20-minute interview, Bauman said he believed the city’s focus should be on responsible fiscal management and public health and safety. He said his experience on the city’s staff would give him a head start on the council.

“I’m well versed in municipal government and I could get off to a fast start,” Bauman said. “I’m a team player.”

The apparent runner up for the position was James Thayer, who worked for Fort Lewis Public Works from 1986 to 2005 and served on Poulsbo’s Design Review Board in 2007.

Councilman Jim Henry said the top two candidates shared many qualities.

“Preparation, communication skills and a clear indication of what they wanted to do on the council,” Henry said.
