BREMERTON — The City of Bremerton will receive a grant from the State Transportation Improvement Board for $4,942,722 to reconstruct Lebo Boulevard.

The project will revitalize the boulevard from Lower Wheaton Way to the city limits, and will include widening sidewalks, bike lanes, street lights, on-street parking and street trees.

The estimated overall cost is $5,814,469, meaning the grant will only pay for 85 percent of the project. The rest of the money will come from the utility capital funds and the street capital fund. If necessary, the Transportation Benefit District could also become a partner in the project.

“This is a wonderful project that builds on our bridge-to-bridge urban trail concept,” said Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent in a press release, “and in addition, provides a new, modern street along one of the most beautiful areas of our city.

“This project will connect our citizens to our waterfront, including Lion’s Park, and builds on the prior work completed by the city on Lower Wheaton Way and Washington Avenue.”

Lent added that the improvement board supported this project “because it will transform this neighborhood,” completing the link from the ferry terminal and transit center to Bremerton’s city limits, as well as being consistent with the “Bridge-to-Bridge vision.”

Lent said it also “improves walkability, which brings our neighborhoods together.”
