Kingston boys hand North Mason its first loss
The Kingston High School boys basketball team handed North Mason its first loss of the 2009-10 season Tuesday, defeating the Bulldogs 57-54 in overtime.
“It was a crazy game,” said Kingston High Head Coach Blake Conley.
The Buccaneers (4-1) faced a 13-point deficit at halftime, despite doing nearly everything right, Conley said.
“Everything we were doing, I liked. We just weren’t hitting shots,” he said.
But in the second half, the Bucs stepped up on both sides of the ball. The offense began to sink shots, while the defense neutralized North Mason’s star point guard, Brett Skogstad.
“We just had a game plan, and we believed in it and executed it,” Conley said. “We just fought. It was awesome to see the kids be down and not give up.”
The win highlighted the about-face Kingston has made this season. Last year the Bucs managed just one win, while North Mason shared the Olympic League title with North Kitsap and Port Angeles.
The Bucs face district rival North Kitsap Friday. Play begins at 7 p.m. at North Kitsap High.
Kingston girls shellack North Mason
The Kingston High girls basketball team improved to 3-2 Tuesday with a 68-22 win over North Mason.
The Buccaneers spread the scoring around in the win. Junior Sophia Baetz led the team with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Lindsey Wicklein added 15 points and four steals. Senior Laura Wicklein had eight assists and five rebounds, and freshman Amanda Carper had eight points and six steals.
The Bucs host district rival North Kitsap at 7 p.m. Friday.
SWIMMING
North Kitsap loses a close one to Port Angeles
The North Kitsap High School boys swim team narrowly lost to Port Angeles Tuesday, 95-88. The Vikings are off until Jan. 7, when they will host Bremerton High.
Kingston splits dual meet with Klahowya, Olympic
The Kingston High boys swim team split its dual meet against Olympic High and Klahowya Tuesday. Kingston defeated Klahowya, 84-69, and lost to Olympic, 102-63. The boys are off until Jan. 7, when they will travel to Port Angeles High to face the Roughriders.
