Port Orchard’s Bay Street Pedestrian Pathway Project will soon have another, very visible, sign that it’s taking one more step toward eventual completion.
Zemek Construction Co. is preparing land, driving pilings and placing abutments to accommodate a new bike/pedestrian bridge that will span Blackjack Creek. A 245-linear-foot, 14-foot-wide asphalt pathway also is being laid to support bridge crossings.
The bridge could be in place as early as the end of next week, according to Mark Dorsey, city Public Works director.
Zemek Construction is working under a $396,460 contract to construct the phase 4 bike/pedestrian bridge.
The project’s phase 4 work will connect to the phase 5 portion at Etta Turner Park, which extends the pathway to the northeast corner of the Ford dealership property. The future segment 3 will connect to already-completed segment 2 that ends near the Marlee Apartments.
The city has more work ahead to complete the pathway project. Property and possibly right-of-way acquisition efforts are expected early next year.
The 11-segment project was fully funded this summer with a state transportation funding package grant approved by the state legislature. The $3.5 million funding will be used for final work from 2019 to 2023,
Dekalb Pier Replacement
The city’s Public Works organization also reported that Port Orchard has received a $755,000 grand from the recently passed state budget to complete the Dekalb Pier Replacement, Repair and Renovation Project.
According to Dorsey, work has begun to update previously acquired permits during the phase 1 work to prepare for phase 2. That phase will include removing the existing gangway, floats and piling, extending a 300-foot catwalk pier, and a new gangway, floats and piling that meet Department of Natural Resources requirements.
“In-water work” is expected to be completed July 1, 2016. The overall project is to be finished by the end of next year. In the meantime, the pier will remain closed.
