HOOD CANAL — A two-vehicle crash late Monday morning caused 30 gallons of diesel fuel to spill onto State Route 3.

A semi-truck collided with an SUV in what Washington State Patrol Trooper Russ Winger described as a glancing blow.

However, the crash caused the semi-truck to jackknife, which resulted in damage to a fuel tank. The fuel was spread by traffic driving past the crash, spreading down the road by about 600 feet.

The driver of the SUV had minor injuries. The truck driver was not injured.

The state Department of Transportation was called in to clean up the spill.

The Department of Ecology is assessing the area to see if any further cleanup is required, and how much fuel leaked off the roadway, Winger said.

“It was really a minor crash, except for the fuel spill,” Winger said.

The road was closed to traffic for a short time and reopened to alternating traffic in one lane at about 1 p.m. The road is now completely open.
