Port Orchard resident Sherry Barnart, past vice commodore of the Port Orchard Yacht Club, won second place April 10 for Best Decorated Boat in the Tacoma Daffodil Yacht Club Parade.
The work on the “Westerly” was done by POYC members David Enke, Jim Bowron, Pat Paradise, Georgie Kelly, Bob and Pat Irving, Jerry Cheek, Mike Petrowski, Darroll Clark and Vice Commodore Ed Richards.
The theme was “Neptune’s Garden” and the yacht had a design of King Neptune holding a trident that moved back and forth, skewering a stingray and a porpoise with a large daffodil-festooned star. The boat had waves, waving mermaid, sea critters and was topped off with a metallic blue skirt.
Bob and Pat Irving’s boat, “Mircale” took third place in the Best Wooden Boat contest. The boat is a 1929 Lake Union Dream Boat.
This was the first time the yacht club won two trophies in a parade.
Barnhart’s boat also won the second-place “Golden Potlatch Trophy” for Best Novelty Decorated Boat in the Seattle Yacht Club Parade on May 3. The theme was “Toys Ahoy.”
The boat was decorated with a huge yellow inflated rubber duck on the forward deck, with inflatable surfboards, sun with sunglasses, Hawaiian flip-flop, sand buckets and shovels, ice cream cones and other toys on the life lines and a metallic blue fringed skirt. There also was a large American flag on top of the mast.
