POULSBO — The Vikings saved themselves a potential let down May 14.
The varsity team defeated the Franklin Pierce Cardinals 7-5 in the second round of the West Central 2A District Tournament. The win guarantees the Vikings a seed into the 2A State Tournament.
The Vikings went on to lose 11-3 to White River and 6-4 to Fife, May 17 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
The Vikings (13-9) finished the district tournament in fourth.
Sumner defeated White River 3-2 in the championships.
The Vikings will travel to Cedarcrest High School May 24 to play Lake Washington in the first round of the state tournament. The game starts at 1 p.m. The winner plays either Archbishop Murphy or Fife. The loser is eliminated.
The Vikings are one of two from the Olympic League to make state. The Klahowya Eagles also advanced from the district tournament.
The Sequim Wolves and Olympic Trojans were eliminated during the district tournament.
If the Eagles and Vikings win their first two games, they will play each other in the state semifinals in Yakima County Stadium, May 30.
The championship game will be May 31 at 4 p.m. in Yakima County Stadium.
