SILVERDALE THUNDER
Boats will be zipping across Dyes Inlet at upwards of 100 mph this weekend, as hydroplane races are back in Old Town Silverdale. Two weeks off the 60th anniversary of Seafair in Seattle, some the region’s leading speed boaters will be back on the water Aug. 15-16 for Silverdale Thunder.
On land, there will be main stage entertainment, street vendors, live music, a carnival and beer garden throughout the weekend. The Thunder kicks off with the inaugural Silverdale Thunder Boat Show, opening the night before the races at 5 p.m. Friday at the Old Town Silverdale dock. Racing will commence at 11 a.m. Saturday. OLLALAFEST: BLUEGRASS AND BEYOND
The essence of the community fundraiser is exemplified at the Olalla Bluegrass (and Beyond) Festival.
This Saturday marks the 18th year for the South Kitsap community event.
The festival — which started when a community member mentioned the idea as a means to raise funds for the aging Olalla Community Club — has sinced raised enough money to renovate the 100-year-old hall, dig a well for the building, install a new kitchen, replace the roof and repaint the place twice. And because in traditional Salish language Olalla is the word for “berry” or “berries,” the bluegrass festival also features a berry pie contest each year.
It doesn’t get much more down-home than that.
