Military jets to make test runs above Hood Canal

Sky watchers might spot a military plane flying over the Hood Canal next week, at times spitting out flares.

Boeing is planning to flight test a self-protection system aboard an Australian Air Force Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft, according to a statement from Boeing.

The seven flights will take place in the morning and afternoon between Sept. 28 and Oct. 15. During the tests flares will be released from the aircraft, a 737-700 with Australian Air Force markings.

The flares burn out within five seconds. Those watching from the ground will see a white light and some smoke.

The airplane will be followed by another jet airplane videotaping the tests for later analysis.
