Wrestling squads place at regionals
The Klahowya Secondary School wrestling team finished second at the Class 2A Region III tournament Feb. 12.
The Eagles finished the regional event with a score of 162, behind first-place champions White River High School (188.5 points). Meanwhile, Olympic High School (51) placed 11th in the last meet before the Mat Classic Friday and Saturday.
Klahowya’s Shane Burleson advanced one round with a victory against Jesse Erickson of Fife High School in the 130-pound weight class. Teammate Jared Sell won the 135-pound weight class bracket following three straight wins. Daniel Veach (145), Bryce Gorang (160) and Riley Johnson (189) each lost their first-round bouts. Kevin Schiffman (145) lost in the second round to Zach Schrader of Eatonville High School.
Klahowya’s Jeff Haga (171) defeated teammate Nehemiah Salo while Adam Burchett beat his brother, Brian in the 103-pound championship. Both were forfeits to prevent injuries.
Olympic’s Cody Yeik won the 125-pound class title at the 2A event, and teammate Zeke Gaeta placed fifth.
Bremerton High School’s Lauren Richardson lost to rival Kiana Witt in the 112-pound class at the girls 3A regional Feb. 12. Witt won 8-2 in the finals. Klahowya’s Jessie Vitartas lost in the finals of the 171 class. Bremerton and Klahowya placed 21st and 24th at the girls tournament, respectively.
Central Kitsap High School placed seventh (54 points) at the 4A regional. Tahoma (229), South Kitsap (146), Kentwood (99), Auburn (98) and Kentlake (80) high schools rounded out the top five competitors.
Central Kitsap’s top wrestlers included 2nd-place finisher Kyle Lanoue in the 285-pound class. Joey Troyer (125, third), Ian Sprecher (130, fifth), Tyler Kahl (152, fifth), Warren Sprecher (119, sixth) and Brett McDonald (171, sixth) all placed at the 4A tune-up for state.
BlueJackets host annual Fan Fest
The Kitsap BlueJackets semi-pro baseball team will host its annual free Fan Fest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds Eagles Nest across the street from the Kitsap Pavilion.
The Kitsap community is invited to get a peek at the upcoming 2011 season, which will be the team’s seventh. Attendees will meet team owners and host families while watching highlights and videos with other BlueJackets fans. Invited guests include Kitsap County officials, past and present players and Jack, the mascot.
The event will also feature a free youth baseball clinic with prizes and games. Free hot dogs, drinks and snacks will be served.

USGA returns to Gold Mountain
The United States Golf Association announced this week that the Gold Mountain Golf Club, a 36-hole municipal complex in Bremerton, will once again host amateur golf July 18 to 23.
Gold Mountain hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links in 2006, and will return with the 2011 Junior Amateur at the 7,133-yard Olympic course.
The Gold Mountain management team has been asked by the association to prepare a seminar for other managing teams from various association championship sites.
Although junior amateur tournaments are normally hosted by private clubs, Gold Mountain was granted the chance to host this year’s championship at its public course.

Foundation cracks crab for scholarships
The Chuck Semancik Foundation, a Bremerton-based non-profit corporation, will host Crackin’ Crab for Chuck’s Kids 4 at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 5.
The event will be hosted at the Bremerton Sons of Norway Hall and doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Papa John’s Pizza will be served as an alternate dish along with beverages. The Latin jazz band Tres Bolero is scheduled to perform. Single tickets are $30 each, or those interested may purchase four or more tickets at $25 each.
Reduced prices are available for children under 12 years old. Donations are also welcomed at the event. Corporate sponsorships are available as a table of eight costs $400. Corporate tables will include their own server and group recognition.

All proceeds go to the foundation’s scholarship endowment that benefits Bremerton High School students. The Semancik Foundation is currently in its 10th year.
Trojans to host baseball clinic, sell M’s tickets
The Olympic High School baseball team will host its 9th annual Baseball Skills Clinic on Wednesday, March 30.
The clinic is set to take place at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds Baseball Complex or the Olympic High School gymnasium depending on the weather.
It will include novice to experienced boys and girls baseball players from grades kindergarten to 8.
The fee is $35 and a T-shirt is guaranteed if registered by March 11.
The team will also play Foss High School in a non-league game April 16 at Safeco Field in Seattle. The game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Olympic is the lone Class 2A school selected for the High School Classic, which features 12 teams from Washington state. Foss is a 3A school.
Olympic’s baseball program needs to sell 1,000 tickets for the Seattle Mariners’ June 2 game against Tampa Bay in order to return in 2012.
Mariners tickets, which are at the 300 level of the stadium, are on sale by the school for $12, and $4 of that will go directly to the program. The face value price is $20. Tickets are available for both the Olympic-Foss and Mariners-Rays games. Admission is free for the Olympic game and parking is discounted at $5.
