NORTH KITSAP — North Kitsap’s Reagan Colyer took first place in the 300-meter hurdles and Kingston’s Marina Roberts came in first in the 1600-meters at the 2A State Track Meet, May 27-28 at Tahoma High School.
The North Kitsap and Kingston high school track teams sent 17 athletes to the state meet.
Though she thought she had a better chance in the 3200-meters, Roberts said she was up against tough competition.
“Before the races, I always look to see who’s in it,” she said. “There were a lot of good racers.”
Sixteen girls competed in the 3200. Of the 16, Roberts finished in second in 10:57.17 and Cheney High School’s Sanne Holland (10:50.12) took first. Roberts began the race too quickly. She knew Holland had a good “kick” — quick start — and tried to match it.
“I was just trying to get ahead of her part way through to tire her out, but she didn’t get tired … I did,” Roberts said with a laugh.
Things turned around for the Kingston junior in the 1600. Holland was pushed back to third place (5:11.17) and Roberts took first (5:05.53) with Sequim’s Audrey Lichten (5:05.68) less than one second behind.
When it comes to her favorite race, Roberts enjoys whichever she does well in and really gets into at the time. She will have one more shot at taking first place in the 3200 next year — along with running cross country in the fall. The cross country runners begin training in the summer, but she will take one week off to rest.
“I will just try and get my times down … More speed,” she said.
