A 53-year-old Olalla man was arrested Friday for allegedly hitting a 10-year-old boy while driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in South Kitsap, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said that the accident occurred around 12:45 a.m. when the boy was sledding on Banner Road SE, headed northbound. The driver of the ATV was headed southbound on Banner, and just south of the intersection with Fragaria Road, the ATV collided with the sled, critically injuring the boy.

Wilson said the child suffered facial fractures and other trauma, and was transported to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma.

After the collision, the driver of the ATV reportedly fled on foot, but was identified by witnesses on scene. Deputies later contacted him at his residence in Olalla two hours after the collision and placed him under arrest of vehicular assault and hit and run with injury or death.

He was then booked into Kitsap County Jail under $50,000 bail. He made his initial appearance in Kitsap County Superior Court Friday afternoon.
