Four South Kitsap School District students placed at the State History Day Contest on May 3.

For the second time since the district began participating in the History Day Program six years ago, a SKSD student, Garrett Jordan, will advance to the National History Day Contest. The students competed with 575 students who had also advanced from their regional competitions last month.

Jordan, a ninth-grade student, placed second for his documentary “Inside the Chinese Uprising of 1989: The Responsibility to Protest and the Rights of the Protesters.”

He will represent Marcus Whitman Junior High and the SKSD at the National History Day Contest, June 15-19, at the University of Maryland in College Park. The theme of History Day this year is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.”

Naia Kennedy, an eighth-grader, placed fifth for her exhibit “Red Wolf: The Road to Recovery.” She also received the “Animal Welfare Award” and a $50 prize.

Mary Sprague, a ninth-grader, placed fourth for her performance “Clara Barton: Redefining Humanitarianism through the Red Cross” and also received the “Women’s History Award” and a $100 prize from the Washington State Colonial Dames.

Seventh-grader Anya Fogelplaced third for her documentary “The Bhopal Disaster: Rights Denied, Responsibilities Neglected.”
