When Cheryl Mathis opened the Coffee Club Diner on Park Avenue in May, she had more on her mind than tasty food and drinks.

“This project is a calling of mine to feed the hungry,” she said. “When I opened the restaurant, I really wanted to help the community.”

On Thanksgiving Day, the diner will host a special feast for the homeless as well as others in the community, featuring a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

The meal will be donation only, though the restaurant’s employees have been providing coupons to those in need in the community. Mathis said the restaurant also encourages other people with no place to go for the holiday, such as members of the military.

The diner will begin serving the meal at 1 p.m. and continue until 6 p.m. The restaurant, which regularly serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, is located at 417 Park Ave. in downtown Bremerton.

Mathis previously worked as a nurse in home health care for 15 years before opening the restaurant in the spring. For her, the dinner is another way she can give back to the people of Bremerton.

“I don’t want to advertise this as just a free dinner,” she said. “We encourage the community to support us.”
