INDIANOLA — A 49-year-old Indianola man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center’s trauma unit after receiving serious burns in an Indianola home fire Tuesday evening, according to Poulsbo Fire spokeswoman Jody Matson.
Firefighters from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island Fire Departments, and the Suquamish Police responded to the fire on Sisters Sky Lane in Indianola just before 9 p.m. The first units arrived on scene within three minutes and found the garage of the house fully involved and the fire quickly spreading into the main house. A speed boat parked near the garage ignited, and the nearby house was showing signs of ignition because of the intense heat. Firefighters poured more than 10,000 gallons of water on the residence and had the fire under control within 20 minutes. They also doused the neighboring house and prevented the fire from spreading.
Medics treated the injured man on scene and then transported him to a Bainbridge Island fire station, where he was later airlifted. The other residents, a 49-year-old woman and her 16-year-old daughter were not injured. The injured man and the woman’s adult children, 27- and 24-year-old females, a 1-year-old grandchild, and three dogs, were visiting at the time of the fire and were also uninjured.
Bystanders said the family explained that when they were in their living room when they heard noises. When the father went to the garage to investigate and opened the garage door, he was overwhelmed with flames.
Total damage estimates are unknown at this time but the garage was completely destroyed, as well as a truck that was parked in the garage, a motor boat, and a portion of the main residence. The Kitsap County Fire Marshal is investigating the incident. The Suquamish Tribe and family members are assisting the family and it is unknown at this time whether the home was insured.
Matson filmed Battalion Chief Ken LeMay explaining the fire after it was under control, watch it on YouTube.
