Bras support good causes

With themes ranging from “Alice in Wonderbra Land” to “The Wizard of Bras,” the second annual Bras for a Cause is all about having fun while supporting local women and children.

The Soroptimist International of Greater North Kitsap-sponsored event is at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Kitsap Conference Center at Bremerton Harborside. Recipients include the Harrison Medical Center Oncology Department Healing Garden Project, the youth grief counseling program provided by Hospice of Kitsap County and cancer retreat programs for local residents at Harmony Hills. Last year, the event raised more than $15,000 for cancer-related services.

“It’s an outrageous, fun way to raise money for people in need,” said Barbara Hartley of Soroptomist International of Greater North Kitsap.

Bras are decorated in a variety of different and creative ways and are auctioned off with proceeds going back into the local community.

“The auction is tons of fun.” Hartley said. “We keep all of the money local.”

Many of the bras up for auction are accompanied by gift certificates to area businesses including one for a Holland America Cruise. Entries can still be submitted, but time is running out. The deadline to submit a bra is Friday, Oct. 10.

“We’re just trying to encourage anyone who wants to make one, but they’re running out of time,” Hartley said. “If someone wants to make one and doesn’t have an idea, I have a million ideas. I want to see a pirate bra and a Christmas bra with all the lights.”

All mediums are welcome in designing the bras. Last year, entries were adorned with beads, jewels, feathers and even copper.

“A lot of them are not wearable, they’re just for show,” Hartley said.

Tickets for the event are available at Silverdale Antiques or Well Being Health Center and Dream Dinners in Poulsbo.
