There is little time for celebration in sports.
Win or lose, a coach’s thoughts usually shift to the next game within minutes.
It is understandable from Kathy Ballew’s standpoint. After defeating Olympia 13-1 in five innings Monday, the Wolves’ next Narrows League game is Monday at Wilson.
The Rams entered the week with a one-game lead in the Bridge Division, but lost 7-6 against South on April 20. A win could give the Wolves their first Bridge title since 2005.
“It all comes down to Monday,” Ballew said. “I know they will be angry and ready to get revenge. I know we’ll be ready for them.”
South (10-2 overall, 10-2 league) experienced most of its success in the even innings against the Bears.
Center fielder Meagan Ransier led off the game with a single and scored two batters later on a ground-ball out by Emily Cunningham. The early lead was little more than a warm up against Olympia pitcher Mackenzie Loete.
With one out in the second inning, Ericka Henderson singled, Meghan Houston reached first when the shortstop dropped a pop-up and Julie MacMillan walked. Henderson then scored on a single by Ransier, but Houston was picked off at third base during the ensuing at-bat before Emily Bricks walked to load the bases again.
The Bears tried to pick off their second base runner of the inning, MacMillan, but the catcher’s throw went off the third baseman’s glove, which allowed her to score. Three pitches later, Cunningham hit a triple to deep right field that scored Ransier and Bricks. Cunningham reached home on a wild pitch during the ensuing at-bat that gave the Wolves a 6-0 lead. Bridjet Box grounded out to end the inning.
Ransier said Loete had good command of her pitches, but featured less velocity than other starters she has seen.
“(When) you can see her pitches, it’s a lot easier to hit,” she said. “We can out swinging and did really well.”
Olympia (5-9, 4-7) scored its only run off Cunningham in the third inning when catcher Nikki Schroeder’s sacrifice fly to center field scored right fielder Alicia Jackson. Cunningham allowed just two hits, while striking out five batters. Two of those came in the fifth inning after the Bears’ first two hitters reached on errors. Cunningham then struck out Loete and Emma Miller before inducing Schroeder into a ground out to end the game.
“Sometimes she says, ‘I better do it myself then,’ ” Ballew said. “You can see that fire under her. It was a nice outing.”
South’s offense was just as successful. The Wolves added a run in the third inning when a ground out by Henderson scored first baseman Alexis O’Dell.
But South’s biggest inning came in the fourth when eight consecutive runners reached base. With one out, Ransier walked and Bricks singled. Cunningham, who finished 2 for 3 with three RBI, followed with a single to score Ransier. Box then tripled to score two runs to extend the Wolves’ lead to 10-1.
With two outs, Ericka Hobson walked and Henderson singled. Both scored during the ensuing at-bat when shortstop Holly Lider, who went 2 for 2 with two RBI, doubled to right-center field. Jackson, who allowed one run in relief, struck out pinch-hitter Charlene “Charlie” Brown to end the inning.
But it was more than enough for South to win for the sixth time in its last seven games. The Wolves’ lone loss during that span came last week, 9-7, at Central Kitsap.
Ransier, a junior, said there is a different feeling around this year’s team. South has not reached the Class 4A state tournament since 2003.
“We have really good team chemistry and all the players love to be here,” “We’re looking to win state.”
