Dave Villwock has broken just about every notable record on the Unlimited Hydroplane circuit, but that has not kept him from pursuing more.

Villwock, a 1972 South Kitsap High School graduate, won his 10th national title Sunday at the San Diego Bayfair. He qualified with the top speed and won all three preliminary heats in addition to the final.

The win gave Villwock, who pilots the U-96 Spirit of Qatar, 7,525 points in the Air National Guard Series driver standings. Rookie Scott Liddycoat is second with 5,389 points. There are 2,100 points available in November’s season finale in Doha, Qatar.

Villwock’s 10 national championships are a record. Chip Hanauer is second with eight, followed by Bill Muncey’s seven. Villwock also has a record 65 wins. He broke the circuit record set by Muncey, who was killed in a race in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1981, earlier this season. Muncey had 62 career wins.

One significant milestone Villwock has not reached is the most Gold Cups. That event, which arguably is the circuit’s top race, is held annually in Detroit. Hanauer, who has 61 career wins, has won the most Gold Cups with 11. Villwock has nine.

Volleyball team remains undefeated

Junior Toni Brown-Bell had 11 kills, four blocks and four aces to guide South Kitsap to a 25-23, 25-12, 16-25, 25-19 win last week against Wilson in nonleague play.

Tia Arrowsmith also had 31 assists and Casey Deese added 12 digs as South (3-0) matched its 2010 win total.
