POULSBO — A Ford SUV was crushed the afternoon of Dec. 16 when the driver attempted to take a right turn at the same time as a semi-truck towing a trailer.

The two vehicles were at the intersection of Sunset Street and Front Street, attempting to take a right on to Front Street, according to witnesses.

According to Carolyn Thompson, who was driving behind the Ford, the semi-truck was making a wide, right turn on to Front Street. Because of the large trailer, the truck had to use a portion of the left-turn lane in order to make the tight turn. The truck waited for traffic to clear to make the turn; when it began to move, the driver of the Ford tried to take a right.

The Ford was crushed under the middle of the trailer. A Poulsbo resident who lives one house down from the intersection said she heard “a loud crunch.”

Thompson said the driver may have just become impatient waiting for the truck.

The resulting collision left the driver of the Ford stuck in the driver’s seat for at least 15 minutes. The driver eventually got out of the vehicle.

No injuries were initially reported.

Mail trucks go in and out of the area everyday. Melinda Allen, who was walking her two dogs when she happened upon the crash, said she’s never seen a close call with the trucks. She said the truck drivers are careful.

It was one of several crashes in the Poulsbo area that day.

On Highway 305 near Suquamish Way, a man was seriously injured when a pickup truck crashed head-on into his car, snarling traffic for several hours. A fender-bender was reported at Suquamish Way and Division Avenue. A non-injury crash was reported at 305 and Viking Avenue. A crash with possible injury was reported on Front Street near the Liberty Bay Auto Center.
