A Bremerton man was arrested Saturday for a firearm carry violation when a deputy discovered a pistol in a vehicle during an otherwise routine traffic stop. A South Kitsap woman was also arrested for illegal drug possession.

David Ernest Meyers, 43, was booked into the Kitsap County for carrying the firearm without a license and Samantha L. Bernier was booked for violating the Uniform Controlled Substance Act.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Cory Manchester stopped a blue Chevrolet Cavalier with no front plates and cracked windshield at about 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Ricky Road and Sylvan Way. Deputy Manchester noticed furtive movements in the vehicle while making the stop and approached the passenger side of the car.

After circling around to the driver’s side, Deputy Manchester noticed a silver and black handgun that was barely visible between some clothing and a purse.

“I drew my firearm and ordered all occupants to raise their hands up,” Deputy Manchester said. “It made me very nervous that I had been on the stop for a few minutes, and nobody inside the car bothered to tell me about the gun, which was mostly concealed.”

Deputy Manchester held Meyers, Bernier and the driver at gunpoint until a pair of Bremerton police officers arrived to provide backup.

The driver of the car told police that Meyers pulled the gun out of the glovebox while they were being pulled over and told her to shut up. Meyers later told police that he didn’t know what a CPL, or concealed pistol license, was, and that he thought it was okay to have a gun in the vehicle as long as it was unloaded and visible. He also told police he bought the gun, a .45 caliber Colt with a silver and black grip, for $450 from somebody named “Tom” about a year ago.

Police say that Meyers was wearing a holster at the time of his arrest. An empty magazine was found on the floorboard in the backseat, six unspent rounds of .45 caliber Winchester ammunition were found in the glovebox and one more unspent round was found on the front passenger seat floorboard.

Police also found an unmarked pill bottle with four 30 milligram Percocet pills. Bernier admitted that the pills were hers and she did not have a prescription, according to police.
