Poulsbo Fire Department received an unusual visit recently when a wooden fire engine and its 75-year-old creator, Vern Helgeson. Helgeson explained, “Firefighters visited my home a few times and transported my wife to the hospital. The last time they were there, one of the emergency medical technicians (EMTs) admired my miniature Humvee and asked when I was going to make a fire engine.” Helgeson is a retired coppersmith from Keyport Naval Base where he worked on high pressure torpedoes and said he’s been working with his hands his entire life. “My grandkids love the miniature vehicles I make, they like Humvees the best,” he said. Deputy Chief of Operations Thomas O’Donohue said “Well, I’m sure the children who attend our annual firefighter’s pancake breakfast would love to see this miniature fire engine.”
