All-Olympic League baseball

Olympic High School outfielders Blake Johnson and Chris Campbell and third baseman Jordan Halstead have been named to the 2010 All-Olympic League baseball first team.

Olympic’s Chris Groat, Keith Davis and Riley Crow were named to the second team.

Klahowya Secondary School’s Brandon Neet earned a position on the second team.

Vettleson named MVP — again

Central Kitsap High School senior Drew Vettleson has been named the Narrows League Bay Division Most Valuable Player for the second season in a row.

The senior outfielder and pitcher hit .490 with seven home runs and 29 RBI during the regular season.

Teammates Tyler Baumgartner and Brett McDonald were named to the first team. Pitcher Josh Sontag, catcher Brian Gustofson and outfielder Josh Kreifels were second-teamers. Pitcher Nathan Reece, infielder Jonathon Fergus and outfielder Brandon Bynum earned honorable mention.

Central Kitsap baseball falls at state tourney

The Central Kitsap High School baseball team was knocked out of the Class 4A state tournament in a 5-4 loss Saturday to Mountlake Terrace High School at Everett Stadium.

It was the fourth straight trip to state for the Cougars, who have now been eliminated in the first round two consecutive seasons. Central Kitsap held a 4-2 lead entering the seventh inning, but Mountlake Terrace scored three runs in the bottom-half of the inning to earn the come-from-behind victory.

Diamond Players Baseball Academy

The Diamond Players Baseball Academy presents summer training camps for players ages 8 to 13 at the 19,000-square-foot Competitive Edge training center, 11706-A 24th Ave E, Tacoma.

Sessions begin June 28 and are Monday through Thursday. Weekly sessions are available through Aug. 5. All aspects of the game are taught using a circuit training format and state-of-the-art training equipment. Daily sessions include skill competitions and games. Black and Orange wrestling

Central Kitsap High School in June will host a technique-based “Black and Orange Wrestling Camp” for athletes in grades seven through 12.

The camp is June 22-24, with sessions running from 9 to 11 a.m., 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., and it is limited to the first 120 signups. All participants will receive a camp T-shirt. The cost is $100.

Coaches who have participants at the camp may attend for free. Meals will not be provided, so attendees are encouraged to bring lunch and water. A snack bar with sports drinks, energy bars and candy will be open.

Showers will be provided, but towels won’t.

The camp clinicians are four-time NCAA champion and United States Olympic coach Dan Russell, two-time All-American and Oregon State University assistant Kevin Roberts and four-time NCAA qualifier and Oregon State assistant Travis Pasco. There will be one clinician on site each day.

Kitsap Pumas

The Kitsap Pumas qualified for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 2-0 victory Saturday over the Washington Crossfire at Bremerton Memorial Stadium.

Defender Mark Lee and first-year midfielder David Gray provided the scoring for the Pumas (4-0-0), who with the win remained tied with the Highlanders of Victoria for first place in Premier Development League Northwest Division.

The date, time and location of the club’s first Open Cup game have yet to be announced, but Executive Director Ben Pecora hopes it will be played in Bremerton.

“We will do everything we can to bring that match to Kitsap,” he said.

In 2009 the Pumas hosted an Open Cup game against the Portland Timbers of the United Soccer Leagues First Division, falling 3-0.

Thornton signs

Olympic High School senior Samantha Thornton has signed a letter of intent to play basketball next season at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore.

The Riverhawks belong to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges and compete in the Southern Division.

Thornton averaged 10 points per game for the Lady Trojans during the 2009-10 season.

All-Star football

Central Kitsap High School senior Christian Wesley and Olympic High School seniors Larry Dixon and Blake Johnson will participate in the 2010 4A-3A High School All-Star football game.

The game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 26 at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Wesley will compete on the East team, and Dixon and Johnson will compete on the West squad.
