South Kitsap’s boys soccer finally showed it could win a low-scoring match.

And the reward for beating Gig Harbor 1-0 Tuesday in the Narrows League Tournament at Mount Tahoma High School is the No. 3 seed out of the league.

The Wolves (10-3-1) play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Tahoma against the loser of Wednesday night’s match between Todd Beamer (12-2-2) and Kentridge (10-3-3). Saturday’s winner advances as a No. 5 seed into the state playoffs.

Todd Beamer beat South 2-1 at districts last year to end the Wolves’ season.

“I would like it (to play the Titans) since they knocked us out last year,” said senior forward Brent Ricigliano. “We’ve got a team of seniors ready.”

South had 18 shots on goal against Gig Harbor freshman backup goalkeeper Korey Durkee, but couldn’t score until Ricigliano beat him with a ball on his right-hand side in the 47th minute. Justin Moore was credited with an assist.

“It was a cross from Gavin (Klein) and Justin and the defender went for it,” Ricigliano said. “I was just right there and went for it. I thought it was going to miss.”

That was a theme at times during the match. Ricigliano had perhaps his best look directly in front of the goal in the sixth, but he kicked it directly at Durkee.

“We had some opportunities to put some sitters away,” said South coach Michael Krug, whose team won its first match of the season where they scored less than two goals. “We didn’t do it. We let a good team hang around again.”

That doesn’t mean he was disappointed, though. Krug said he felt the offensive execution was better than Saturday’s 2-1 loss against Bellarmine Prep in the league semifinals.

“I thought they dealt with the situation a little bit better,” he said. “Transition at times was much better.”

Krug jokes that the scoring issues are a “worldwide problem,” but notes the Wolves can improve.

“It’s just composure in the attacking third,” he said. “It takes a very special player to be composed with the ball on their foot in that area of the field.”

He also noted that three starters — center backs Kaleb Craig, Boyd Shelby and Jason Skolnik — all sat out with injuries. The Tides were able to get nine shots on goal, but Daniel Lathrop earned his sixth shutout of the season.

“It was really nice to see some players come off the bench and earn minutes,” Krug said. “It was encouraging to see.”

He’s just as bullish about South’s prospects for advancing to state for the first time since 2006. Krug guided the Wolves’ girls soccer team to state in the fall.

“We’ll be ready,” he said. “This is why we’ve been working hard for the last 12 weeks.”
