South Kitsap’s boys team placed first among 11 participating teams during Saturday’s Kurt Wagner Memorial Relays at Joe Knowles Stadium.
The Wolves won the 400-meter (44.77 seconds), 1,600 (3:31 minutes) and 3,200 (8:26) and distance relays. They also placed second in the sprint medley and 800 relays.
In the throws, Marcus Burk placed third with a league-qualifying discus hurl of 137 feet, 6 inches, while Chandler VanAmen finished in the same position in the shot put (43-07 1/4). Isiah Cotton also took third in the long jump with a league-qualifying mark of 20-00 1/2.
On the girls side, South finished fourth. The pole vault relay was second, while the discus and shot put relay teams also placed.
Jessica Peterson finished fourth in the 3,000 meters, while the 1,600-relay team placed in the same spot.
This is the second year of the relays. It was named after former South Kitsap School District deputy superintendent Kurt Wagner, who succumbed to cancer last April. Wagner, a former triple jumper at Central Washington University, regularly officiated that event at high-school meets. In 2012, the event was known as the South Kitsap Relays, which is run similar to the Bremerton Relays that ran until 2009.
The meet replaced the South Kitsap Invitational — an April staple at Joe Knowles Stadium. Zimmer said that meet increasingly was becoming difficult to stage because it often ran against bigger events, such as the Pasco Invitational, which is regarded as the state’s top regular-season meet, or the Larry Eason Invitational in Snohomish.
Wolves suffer nonleague setback
South Kitsap’s girls tennis team won both of its singles matches, but dropped a 3-2 decision against Wilson when it was swept in doubles during a nonleague match March 21.
Both Kailyn Skjonsby and Emily Wilkins earned 6-0, 6-0 wins against their opponents.

Bellarmine hands South Kitsap its first loss
Aaron Weathington scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute, but it was not enough Monday as South Kitsap suffered its first loss, 3-1, in a Class 4A Narrows League match at Bellarmine Prep.
The setback moves the Wolves (3-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 league) into a third-place tie with Stadium. The Lions (3-3-0, 2-2-0) advanced to fifth place with the victory.
