Another week, another cancellation.
Tuesday, the South Kitsap girls basketball team found its game at Shelton postponed because of snow.
That means the Wolves will play four games in five days next week to conclude the regular season. South initially was scheduled to play twice that week, but also must make up a home game against Bellarmine Prep that was postponed twice because of a power outage.
South coach Mark Lutzenhiser said he and his players were disappointed to hear about another postponement, but noted that it gave them an extra practice day to prepare for today’s game against Foss. The Wolves won the previous game, 54-47, on Dec. 10 at Foss.
The rematch could be important for both teams’ playoff hopes. The top two teams in both the Bay and Bridge divisions automatically advance out of the Narrows League to the West Central District Tournament. South (8-7 overall, 6-4 league) is second in the Bridge Division, while Foss (5-8, 4-6) is fourth.
Lutzenhiser notes that the Falcons have improved since the first meeting between the schools, though. They won 54-50 at Central Kitsap last Friday, and the Cougars won at South.
“Hopefully we’ve improved as well,” Lutzenhiser said.
South then has a makeup game Monday at Shelton (4-10, 4-5) before Tuesday’s game at Gig Harbor (9-7, 8-3). The Tides, who won 42-35 on Dec. 16 at South, are in first place in the Bridge.
Lutzenhiser is hopeful his team can carry momentum from Monday’s 59-44 win against Wilson. The Wolves converted 50 percent of their field goals and had three players produce double-digit points: Angel Sheldon (12), Kelsey Callaghan (11) and Molly Werder (10).
“We did a good job of distributing the ball,” Lutzenhiser said. “We did a pretty good job on our press and Kelsey got some good looks.”
He also was impressed with the Wolves’ defense, which limited Wilson to 31 percent shooting. Lutzenhiser noted that guard Tori Fairweather “had one of her better games” with six rebounds and two steals.
The Rams (1-14, 1-10) have won only once this season, beating winless Stadium 58-21 on Jan. 7, but Lutzenhiser isn’t going to discount the victory, especially after three consecutive losses.
“Wilson’s got some athletic girls,” he said. “We talked about coming out with some intensity and they did. They played really hard.”
One concern for Lutzenhiser revolves around his team’s depth. Ashley Guerrero has missed most of the season with an illness and Lutzenhiser said Ashlee Stoner sustained a knee injury while attempting a 3-pointer against Shelton. Both are senior guards.
