SUQUAMISH — The driver airlifted to Harborview Medical Center Dec. 16 after a head-on collision on Highway 305 was in surgery and headed to intensive care the same afternoon.

Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg said the driver was in serious condition, a step below critical condition.

The driver, a 24-year-old Bremerton man, was injured when Andrew Smith, 32, of Poulsbo, allegedly drove into oncoming traffic and collided with the man’s car.

Smith was booked into Kitsap County Jail on suspicion of DUI after being taken to Harrison Medical Center. Smith’s bail is $30,000, according to the jail roster.

Smith was driving in the northbound lane of Highway 305 when he allegedly sideswiped a box van driving in the southbound lane, toward Bainbridge Island, near 305 and Suquamish Way, according to a Washington State Patrol report. Smith’s truck continued to cross the center line and struck the two-door sedan, according to state patrol.

It is unknown if the Bremerton man was wearing a seatbelt; the car’s airbags deployed.

The collision report from the Washington State Patrol does not specify what substance was found in Smith. The driver of the box van came away from the crash with no injuries.

The crash was reported at 7:46 a.m. The highway was blocked for three hours 45 minutes.
