In Poulsbo, stop and enjoy the sounds of summer

POULSBO – A four-concert series on the shores of Liberty Bay will bring the melodious sounds of summer to North Kitsap residents free of charge.

The city of Poulsbo’s “Summer Nights on the Bay” will kick off July 14, bringing bands to the Kvelstad Pavilion in Waterfront Park. City Parks and Recreation department event coordinator Kris Goodfellow said the concert series is one the city likes to do for its residents, magnified all the more in light of current economic troubles.

“Any time that, as a rec center, we can do something for the community, especially now that the economy is the way it is, activities that whole family can participate in, especially ones that don’t cost any money, are really nice things,” she said.

“Summer Nights on the Bay” is a sponsor-funded series.

Local businesses and residents pitched in to make the venue a paying gig for the bands, some of which will be returning to the park, having played previous summers. Goodfellow said the city continues to support area artists by booking local bands.

The 2009 line up is:

– Voted Kitsap County’s favorite rock and roll band in 2008, One Shot Molly will bring the Rockabilly, Motown and 60s tunes to Poulsbo July 14;

– Three-piece Texas tribute band Tres Hombres will play July 21;

– Funk, rock Latin, R ‘n B and dance will resound August 4, when five-piece band Malo Castro’s 4 Plus Band hits the stage; and

– Seasoned Pacific Northwest musicians Blues Counselors will bring a mix of danceable blues and R ‘n B to the table, wrapping up the series on August 11.

Families are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic basket and take full advantage of the city’s picturesque bay-side lawn.

Event sponsors include: Hill Moving Services, Embarq, Ken and Kaye Winslow of Citigroup Smith Barney, Tizley’s Euro Pub, Sogno Di Vino, Burrata Bistro, and Mayor Kathryn and Doug Quade.

“Our little town is so beautiful, I think just to stop for a little while and enjoy the summer and the sound of the music and the scene on Liberty Bay, that’s really nice,” said Goodfellow.
