Vikings earn two titles Tuesday night

POULSBO — Garrett Wilder knew the Viking varsity soccer team needed to bring a high tempo to the game against Port Angeles Roughriders May 1. A win would guarantee an Olympic League title.

“I just knew we had to play well,” Wilder said. “Had to take our chances when them came.”

The Vikings did just that. The team — mostly seniors on the field Tuesday — had a shutout victory against the Roughriders, scoring 7-0. With the win, the Vikings became the Olympic League champions.

Wilder scored three of the goals, two of which were within the first 10 minutes of the game. Nick Tedford, Matt Moriarty, John Murphy and Brady Sparrow all earned one goal a piece.

Viking goalkeeper Jordan Hadden had the shutout at goal. Most of the game was played on the Roughriders’ end of the field.

The Vikings are now 7-0-0 in league play, with 21 points.

The team still has two games in the regular season; one league game against Klahowya May 3.

Coach Chris May said, although the team has the league title, the Vikings will work for that last win. Going undefeated in the league is a goal this season.

A league title also means the Vikings will be the top seed into postseason play. They will play their first game at home in sub-districts, and with a win, a second at home.

“These guys have worked hard for four years to do this,” May said. “They deserve this.”
