Suraci graduates summa cum laude from CWU: Corey Alan Suraci, a 2004 graduate of North Kitsap High School, graduated summa cum laude from Central Washington University this month with a bachelor’s degree in music. Prior to attending CWU, Suraci traveled all over the country singing with Soundstation, the Edmonds Community College jazz choir. While at CWU, Suraci sang with the group Vocal Jazz 1, had the opportunity to sing in New York, and performed on stage with Nancy King and Bobby McFerrin. Suraci currently serves as music specialist at his church, and plans to pursue a doctorate in music theory in the hopes of becoming a professor of music theory.
NK, KHS students headed to national tech competition: Seven North Kitsap and five Kingston High School students will travel to Denver next week to take part in the Technology Student Association’s national competition. The 12 students earned passage to the national finals after placing atop the Washington state conference in March. North Kitsap was one of three high schools in Washington state to receive a chapter excellence award going into the national finals. Students in the TSA use science and engineering skills to design and construct complex machines, create videos, theorize and prepare presentations.
Summer middle and high school opens its doors: The North Kitsap High School and Middle School Summer School programs, for all students who attended grades six through 12 during the 2008-2009 school year, are accepting registrations. The programs are designed for students who have either failed a course or wish to master skills in a previously taken course. Classes are Monday through Thursday from July 6-Aug. 6, at 8 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Cost is $120 per .5 credit class or one class, and $220 per one-credit class or two classes. Additional course options include the Portable Assisted Study Sequence (PASS), which costs $150, and the Learning Online Center. Students not currently enrolled in NK schools must pay an additional $50 out of district fee. An information session will be held Monday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the NKHS commons. Register now for elementary summer school: The Extended Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) for K-5 students, and Extended School Year (ESY) special education program for preschool through fifth grade students begin July 6. Classes will be held at Vinland Elementary School in Poulsbo from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday from July 6-Aug. 6. Cost for ELOP is $235, or $275 for non-residents.
