Participants learn karate basics — kicking, rolls, falls, punching and self-defense — and the class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. at the Sheridan Park Community Center in Bremerton, 680 Lebo Blvd.

The sessions run for eight weeks with continuous enrollment. For additional information, call (360) 473-5427.

Officials needed

The Peninsula Umpires Association needs individuals who are interested in umpiring all levels of baseball and softball for the 2010 season.

All scheduled meetings and key dates are available at www.peninsulaumpires.org. Those who are interested are encouraged to e-mail recruitinfo@peninsulaumpires.org or call Bob Theal at (360) 620-8779.

Indoor lacrosse

Winter indoor lacrosse sessions are being hosted by the Kitsap Youth Lacrosse Association at the Olympic Soccer & Sports Center at Pendergast Park in Bremerton, 1199 Union Ave. W.

There are youth sessions for boys in grades three through eight as well as for players in high school and older. These are pickup sessions, costing $10 each. For a registration and waiver form, visit www.kitsaplacrosse.com.

Participants are encouraged to either mail the form to the association or bring it to their first session along with the $10 registration fee.

Sessions are refereed and the emphasis is on stick work. Dangerous play is not tolerated.

Registration for the Spring 2010 Boys Youth Lacrosse season also is open. Those wishing to learn and play boys youth lacrosse (grades three through eight) must sign up now. Registration forms are available on the Web. The registration fee is $175.

For additional information, contact the association at (360) 824-7115.

Kitsap Pumas

The Kitsap Soccer Club is hosting open tryouts for prospective professional players Feb. 13 and 14 at Gordon Field at the Fairgrounds, 1200 NW Fairgrounds Road.

The non-refundable registration fee is $50. Prospects are encouraged to pre-register at the club Web site — www.kitsapsoccerclub.com — prior to Feb. 5 because demand is high.

Pre-payment options have yet to be announced.

The club also recently launched a scarf contest. The fan who sends in the most creative photo, incorporating an official Kitsap Pumas club scarf, receives four complimentary tickets to the 2010 regular-season home opener.

Fans must post their entries to the team’s official Facebook page by April 22. Pumas players, coaches and staff will determine a winner.

For additional information, contact club headquarters at (360) 377-6008.
