A 24-year-old Port Orchard man whose mother called police because he was assaulting her outside a fast-food restaurant reportedly bit the deputy who responded to arrest him, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the report, the incident began shortly after 2 p.m. Sept. 15 when the suspect was sitting in the back seat of his mother’s car while she ordered food in the drive-thru of the McDonald’s restaurant on Mile Hill Drive.

His 45-year-old mother told police that her son began arguing with his girlfriend, who was seated in the front seat, and tried to hit her and pull her hair.

His mother said she then stopped the car and told her son to get out, but he refused and she began dialing 911. Her son then tried to take her phone away, so she exited the car, at which point she said he got out and began assaulting her.

She said he pushed her several times and knocked her down, injuring her elbow and knee. He then threw his hamburger and soda at her, kicked her car, then walked away.

She told police that she had kicked her son out of her house recently for using drugs, and that his erratic behavior led her to believe he was currently using them.

When the deputy arrived on scene, at least two witnesses stated that they saw the suspect push his mother, then walk across the street toward South Park Village. Learning that the suspect may have then gone to a nearby apartment, the deputy then located him there.

After placing him under arrest, the deputy reportedly located three pocket knives on the suspect, who then allegedly began yelling profanity at and threatening the deputy.

The suspect then reportedly began exiting the deputy’s car, and when the officer reached out to stop him, the suspect allegedly bit down on the deputy’s right index finger.

While the deputy called for back-up and reached for his Taser weapon, he said the suspect released his finger and “spit a chunk of flesh and blood at me, which was mine.”

Once a back-up deputy arrived and the suspect was detained, South Kitsap Fire and Rescue personnel arrived to treat the deputy’s finger, which reportedly had a “a large chunk (missing) from one side and a puncture wound on the other.”

The suspect was then booked into Kitsap County Jail for assaulting a police officer, fourth-degree domestic violence assault, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence, and third-degree malicious mischief.

His bail was set at $80,000.
