KINGSTON — Across the United States, the events of 9/11 are being remembered.

In North Kitsap, remembrances began at North Kitsap Fire & Rescue’s headquarters, where the community enjoyed breakfast.

The breakfast this year benefits the North Kitsap Schools Foundation, which is attempting to raise $75,000 in 2012.

“It’s become NKF&R’s tradition to remember the many people lost on that terrible day 11 years ago, by bringing neighbors together to strengthen community ties as well as to benefit organizations with the same goals,” spokeswoman Michele Laboda emailed.

Less than 20 miles south, at the Poulsbo Parks and Recreation Center, a Navy music ensemble performed in front of Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson and a group of law enforcement and emergency responders. With miniature American flags waving, children from Martha & Mary’s Child Care Center joined in the remembrance.

With the children following, the color guard and a small group walked to downtown Poulsbo and Martha & Mary’s care center, where “God Bless America” was sung as part of the annual “9/11 Memory Walk.” Poulsbo American Legion Post 245, along with City of Poulsbo, Poulsbo Fire Department, Poulsbo Police, Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department, and Naval Base Kitsap, sponsor the annual walk.
