POULSBO — A Poulsbo woman has been charged with second-degree burglary after she was caught allegedly taking Christmas decorations from a local church.

Susan Elizabeth Siegfried, 51, was arrested on Nov. 28 at 5:40 p.m. after a Poulsbo police officer responded to an alarm at the North Kitsap Baptist Church on Little Valley Road.

Alarms for a lower door and two zones inside the church were set off.

The officer approached Siegfried at her car parked at the south side of the building as she stood behind it with the trunk lid raised. The lights inside the church were off, but a door to the building was propped open.

Siegfried reportedly told the officer that she was at the church because she thought there was a Thanksgiving dinner happening that night, however the officer pointed out that the church was dark and no cars were in the parking lot. The officer looked inside Siegfried’s trunk and saw Christmas decorations and a blanket that matched ones also found inside the church.

Siegfried then reportedly admitted she had entered the building, but said that the decorations were hers. She then said that she found the decorations on a table just outside the church’s door, according to a police report on the incident.

Church officials refuted this account, however, and said the table was cleared earlier that day. Officials also told officers which decorations and blanket were taken. Their description matched the items found in Siegfried’s trunk.

The police officer asked why the decorations and blanket were dry, instead of moist like the table from the cold air. He also said the alarms that were tripped inside the building map a route to where church officials said the decorations were kept.

Siegfried reportedly said she wanted an attorney and did not answer any further questions.

She was arrested and booked into Kitsap County Jail. Bail was set at $25,000.

Siegfried was not on the county’s jail roster as of Dec. 4. She is expected to be in Kitsap County District Court on Dec. 17 and 31.
