POULSBO — Three windows at Red Apple Market were damaged by a BB or pellet gun last week.

As of Wednesday, Poulsbo Police had no leads as to who did it.

One window was broken and reported to Poulsbo Police April 9 around 2:30 a.m. by newspaper carriers. Responding officers found small holes in two other windows to the right of the store’s doors.

Nothing was taken from the store, said Jeff Uberuaga, owner of Red Apple Market.

Uberuaga said he arrived at the store about 3 a.m. Earlier the previous day, a customer caused a commotion inside the store and was ordered to leave. However, Uberuaga said he doesn’t think this incident involves a customer with an axe to grind.

“It’s probably just an act of random vandalism,” Uberuaga said.

Poulsbo Deputy Chief Robert Wright disagreed. No other store along Viking Avenue was shot at or otherwise vandalized that evening.

Wright said he thinks this incident is isolated and isn’t ruling out a disgruntled customer. He said he advised the market’s staff members to call police next time they have an unpleasant customer like the man Uberuaga mentioned. That customer was possibly drunk or high, according to reports made to Wright.

New windows were installed on April 15, costing the store $3,000.

Wright said the department will investigate any leads reported. He said property crimes are “pretty prevalent here” and malicious mischief crimes are not increasing but are consistent.

Wright advises residents to lock their homes, properties and cars, and don’t leave any valuables in cars. If you see something or someone suspicious — such as an unrecognizable person late at night in your neighborhood — call the police so they can check out the situation.

If residents call a few days later, there is no way to investigate, Wright said.
