POULSBO – A 50-year-old Poulsbo man lost his dog, a pit-bull mix, to smoke inhalation Thursday afternoon after the man’s home burned in a fire.

Poulsbo Fire Department and Navy Region Northwest firefighters went to the scene of a house fire at 1 p.m. on Finn Hill Road in Poulsbo. When firefighters arrived, smoke was billowing from the home’s windows, according to Poulsbo Fire spokeswoman Jody Matson. Firefighters were concerned because one window had already blown out and the fire was burning dangerously close to an oil tank located outside near the base of the window.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which appeared to have started on the couch. However, they found the dog deceased.

The cause of the fire was unknown Thursday. The home sustained severe smoke damage and the man was not insured. The American Red Cross is assisting.
