Let the season begin: Poulsbo Farmers Market opens for 2013

Families, pets, shoppers and foodies opened the 2013 season of the Poulsbo Farmers Market on April 6, at its regular location at 7th Avenue and Iverson Street.

POULSBO — Families, pets, shoppers and foodies opened the 2013 season of the Poulsbo Farmers Market on April 6, at its regular location at 7th Avenue and Iverson Street.

This year marks the market’s 10th anniversary.

Opening Day began at 8:45 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting attended by Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson and other local elected officials, as well as Kitsap royalty, courtesy of the Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce.

The market officially opened at 9 a.m. with the ringing of the opening bell, and closed at 1 p.m. Live music was provided by the band Celtic Capers.

The Poulsbo Farmers Market is one of the longest-running farmers markets in the region, with the 2013 season running from April 6 to Dec. 21. The market will be open during Poulsbo’s Viking Fest this year, which means 38 consecutive weeks to shop at the market. In addition, the market will extend its hours in July and August to 2 p.m.

The market features approximately 35 vendors. Returning vendors include long-standing staples of the market, such as produce farmers Abundantly Green Farm and Pheasant Fields Farm; meat vendors Clark Farms and Flying Dog Farm; food vendors Borrowed Kitchen Bakery, Cottage Jams, Mt. Townsend Creamery, and Anna Christina Fudge; and artisans like children’s clothing vendor Molasses Tree and garden art vendor The Bramble Patch.

New vendors will bring some new products to the market, like raw milk from Blackjack Valley Farms, a variety of juices from Zive Juice, and handmade ceramics from Pottery Song.

A wide variety of locally-raised meat products that will be on offer at the market, including beef, chicken, goat, lamb, mutton, pork, and rabbit.

The market will again host a variety of special events, such as Health & Wellness Day on May 11 and Kids Day/Touch-A-Tractor on July 20. New this year is the market’s Picnic at the Pig, a farm picnic hosted after the market by Slippery Pig Brewery in Poulsbo, Aug. 24. This event will include an outdoor picnic dinner, farm games, and a silent auction featuring local products donated by market vendors and Poulsbo businesses.
